TUA Awards 2009

Volunteer of the Year

Awarded to: Matthew Smith

For establishing the Tasmanian Two-Hat as a 2 day tournament, and making it a huge success of it. Last years Two-Hat was by far the largest local tournament held in Tasmanian, and Matt has definitely set the standard for all future tournaments.

The Black & Blue Award

Awarded to: Masni Bennett

For her work on designing the new TUA logo, her effort put into developing the new webiste, and single-handedly rebranding the association.

The logo has been praised nationally, with comments coming from Simon Wood of the AFDA exclaiming his fondness of the logo, and the numerous people at Regionals asking where they could get on of the new Tassie discs sporting the logo.

Lifetime Membership

Awarded to: Jeff Dunn

Jeff has been involved in the Tasmanian Ultimate community since 1999 [he subscribed to tas-ultimate on December 6 1999]. He began by playing pickup games at the University. In 2002, he was a member of Choice Cuts, the first Tasmanian team to compete at an Australian Ultimate Championships since 1989. Jeff was also one of 20 players who managed to arrive at the fields by 8am on a Sunday to play the first series of TUC and was one of the organisers of TUC from 2003-2005.

Jeff has been playing leagues in Hobart since they began in 2001 and has been League Organiser for six leagues (more than any other LO) and processed the game and spirit scores for leagues from 2002-2009. Jeff also helped with setting up the league fields for many years, typically without being asked and still regularly supplies cold ice packs to league.

Whenever a come and try day is planned Jeff is always there to help out. Jeff has also been a volunteer at just about every school learn to play day we have run over the past 10 years. Jeff has taught numerous new Uni players at pick up and has help to continue their development every week.

Jeff was the inaugural Vice President of the TUA and he continued to attend meetings for several years after steeping down as VP in 2004. Jeff is one of the friendliest and most welcoming players we have in Hobart.

I have had several players come up to me in the past two years of social league to tell me that they really enjoyed learning to play Ultimate with Jeff's help. His teaching skills have been really appreciated.

Jeff has played 9 Two-Hats since 2000, only missing the first Two-Hat in 1999 because he hadn't quite started playing ultimate by then.
